Hermione Druella Malfoy, also known as The Cleverness Witch of Her Age (b. 19 September 1979), is a British pure-blood witch, the adoptive daughter of Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy and younger adoptive sister of Draco Malfoy. Maternally, Hermione is the adoptive niece of Bellatrix BlackRodolphus Lestrange, and Andromeda Black, Ted Tonks, and the biological daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Granger. Before her birth parents' deaths, she was a Muggle-born witch known as Hermione Jean Granger. In 1981, when Hermione was 3, Death Eaters killed her parents, prompting Narcissa and Lucius to adopt her as their own daughter. Hermione loves to read books and study, insisting on being at the top of everyone's class. On her sixteenth birthday, Hermione discovers she wasn't Malfoy or pure-blood either. She was pure angry with both her parents, but after marrying Voldemort, he made her a full-blooded wizard.

Biography

Early life (1979–1991)

Hermione Granger was born to Mr. and Mrs. Granger, both accomplished dentists, on September 19, 1979. As their only child, her parents chose a "nice, unusual" first name to showcase their own education and intelligence, ensuring that she would always be recognized as unique and special.

Tragically, when she was just three years old, Death Eaters attacked their family, and Hermione was the sole survivor. In a twist of fate, Narcissa Malfoy decided to adopt her, despite her husband Lucius's strong objections due to Hermione’s Muggle-born status. However, Narcissa’s longing for a daughter ultimately swayed Lucius, and he reluctantly acquiesced. Remarkably, none of Voldemort's followers were aware of Hermione's true origins; Lucius and Narcissa took drastic measures, mixing their blood into the child to mask her Muggle lineage and keep their secret safe.

Afterward, Narcissa skillfully wipes away any memory of their child from Hermione's deceased parents, ensuring they forget entirely, and then they depart with Hermione.

They welcomed her into their home, nurturing her alongside her new brother, Draco, who had recently celebrated his third birthday. Narcissa and Lucius beam with pride at their growing family. To ensure Hermione felt right at home, they arranged for her to have a cozy bedroom on the second floor, conveniently located next to Draco’s room. In a bid to ensure her safety and honor family tradition, the Malfoys resort to a Blood Adoption ritual to effectively mask her Muggle-born origins. Hermione was raised entirely within the enchanting realm of magic. With her tutors guiding her in wizarding etiquette, history, and even the fundamentals of wandless magic, she entered Hogwarts with a remarkable edge. Her insatiable desire for knowledge was powerfully shaped by the rich legacy of ancient pureblood magic.

Hogwarts years (1991–1998)

Hermione treasured her time at Hogwarts, immersing herself in her studies, assignments, and the school's regulations. She was often hailed as a genius, frequently referred to as "the brightest witch of her age." While Charms captivated her initially, she later found a deep passion for Potions. Given her extraordinary abilities, some students, including Terry Boot, questioned why she had been Sorted into Slytherin rather than Gryffindor. Hermione candidly shared that the Sorting Hat had nearly placed her in Gryffindor.

Once sorted into Slytherin, Hermione lived in a dormitory with Pansy Parkinson, Daphne Greengrass, Astoria Greengrass, and a girl with black hair whose name remained unknown.

Despite forming a bond with Harry Potter, Hermione faced skepticism from Ron Weasley, who struggled to trust her due to her ties to the Malfoy family. This dynamic highlights the complexities of loyalty and friendship within the diverse houses of Hogwarts.

Harry's demise and the arranged marriage

Hermione's world was shattered when she lost her best friend, Harry Potter, during the Battle of Hogwarts. In a tragic moment, a spell he attempted backfired after he lost control of his wand, leading to his untimely death. As Voldemort triumphed over Harry, Hermione's devastating scream echoed through the chaos, a haunting testament to her horror and disbelief.
Voldemort offered a haunting choice: join him, and he would spare your life. While many succumbed to his dark allure, others bravely resisted, yet found themselves at his mercy. Hermione and Ron fought valiantly against the Death Eaters, refusing to back down until the very end. In the heat of battle, Ron was struck by a deadly spell, collapsing to the ground. Desperately, Hermione rushed forward to help him, but was captured by Death Eaters before she could reach him. Fueled by determination, she unleashed a flurry of hexes and jinxes against her captors. However, her resolve faltered as she witnessed Ron being gripped by a Death Eater. Overwhelmed with fear, she pleaded for his release, but her cry was silenced as they ended her life in an instant, leaving her to scream in horror. After the war, in a cruel twist of fate, Hermione was forced into marriage with Lord Voldemort, the most powerful dark wizard and a half-blood, sealing her tragic fate. Her parents, Lucius and Narcissa, were terrified. Their adopted daughter is now the Dark Lord's wife, placing their family directly under Voldemort's microscopic, volatile gaze. Hermione stands unyielding. By embracing the persona of the submissive, perfect dark queen, she cleverly manipulates her position to gain access to Voldemort's most closely guarded archives, tirelessly seeking out hidden Horcruxes and magical vulnerabilities.

Personality and traits

Hermione embodied the essence of an internal rebel, a disillusioned yet academically exceptional Slytherin who worked quietly against her family's sinister agenda. Although she absorbed their beliefs, she was far from the archetype of a terrifyingly intelligent, aristocratic pure-blood supremacist. Her demeanor can be quite intimidating to others, especially Ron Weasley, who finds himself afraid of her strong personality. She often acts as the moral compass that slowly pulls Lucius, Narcissa, and Draco away from Voldemort’s cause.

After the war concluded and following her controversial marriage to Voldemort, Hermione's hair took on a darker shade of blonde, and her eyes transformed to a striking green, reflecting the complexities of her journey.

Magical abilities and skills

  • Magical aptitude: At Hogwarts, Hermione was usually the first to master any spell and could use spells beyond her educational level. Even as a fourth year, Hermione had taken multiple O.W.L. practice papers, including one in Transfiguration. She earned ten O.W.L.s: nine 'Outstandings', and one 'Exceeds Expectations', in Defence Against the Dark Arts. Harry Potter was the strongest student in that subject, but even Harry acknowledged that Hermione was 'the best in our year,' and repeatedly admired her spell work. The Patronus Charm is the only spell she ever struggled with, further showing her exceptional magical capabilities.
  • Defence Against the Dark Arts: Hermione was skilled in this subject as she was able to achieve an 'Exceeds Expectations' in her O.W.L. In their first year, she mastered the Full Body-Bind Curse. In their third year, when she took Professor Lupin's exam, Harry saw that she did everything perfectly except for the part of fighting the Boggart. Despite this aptitude, this was the one subject Harry was better at than she was, something she freely acknowledged. Hermione mastered all the spells taught by Harry in their fifth year in Dumbledore's Army. She mastered the Stunning Spell, Impediment Jinx, and various other offensive and defensive spells. She was capable of using powerful defensive and offensive spells such as the Blasting Curse. If Hermione had become an Auror, she would have excelled, but she instead dedicated herself to rebuilding the wizard laws.

"Neville, I'm really, really sorry about this. Petrificus Totalus!"

— Hermione's use of the Full Body-Bind Curse in her first year
  • Dark Arts: Hermione was not known for her ability to perform dark magic, and the extent of her capacity is truly unknown, but it could be assumed, given her borderline genius status, that she was no slouch, as she was able to successfully cast various potent dark charms. She was able to cast the Leg-Locker Curse and Full Body-Bind Curse in her first year, the Jelly-Legs Jinx in her sixth, and successfully cast a Stinging Hex at a moment's notice. Hermione had enough skill to come up with a very sophisticated jinx that would deform the face of a person who betrayed the D.A., which she taught to her comrades. She also cast the Oppugno Jinx to send several conjured canaries at Ron Weasley in 1996, to express her annoyance and anger at him for kissing Lavender Brown. Furthermore, she was able to cast a particularly powerful and destructive Blasting Curse, which she used to blast Nagini with in Godric's Hollow in December 1997; a cast so powerful that it broke Harry's wand. In the Battle of Hogwarts, she eventually rebels against Voldemort’s atrocities, using the Malfoys' political weight and knowledge of the Dark Arts against him.

"Ms. Malfoy, this is excellent. You have talent!"

— Horace Slughorn praising Hermione's encyclopedic knowledge of potions

  • Potions: Hermione was exceptionally gifted at potion-making. She was able to quickly identify potions and their effects after only reading about them. She was able to brew the very advanced and difficult Polyjuice Potion in her second year for Harry, and Ron, and her to find the truth about the Chamber of Secrets from her brother, Draco Malfoy, by disguising themselves as his friends. She achieved an 'Outstanding' on her Potions O.W.L. and was only one of twelve to advance to N.E.W.T.-level. Hermione was the only one in her sixth-year class who understood Golpalott's Third Law, without need for further explanation, and was able to compose an antidote containing fifty-two ingredients, including a chunk of her own hair. The only time she was ever out-smarted in potions was in her sixth year by Harry Potter because he was using the Half-Blood Prince's old copy of the Advanced Potion-Making textbook that was full of hints and scribbles that helped Harry excel. This frustrated her greatly.
  • Healing magic: Hermione had impressive skills in and knowledge of healing magic. She had knowledge of the Mandrake's healing properties in her second year, and was able to skilfully take care of both Harry Potter's wound from fighting Nagini and Ron Weasley's splinching wound in 1997, using Essence of Dittany. She was also knowledgeable of healing spells, but was not confident enough in using them on a Splinched Ron, as she feared causing him more damage.
  • Duelling: Hermione demonstrated her exemplary abilities in martial magic on numerous occasions, showing remarkable duelling skill for her age. She had very fast reflexes when it came to wand work; for instance, she drew her wand and placed a Shield Charm between Harry and Ron when they were quarrelling before either of them could even draw their wands in 1997, and when the trio was spotted by Death Eaters during the Battle of Hogwarts, she was the first to react, sending them to safety. Her duelling style was creative and unpredictable, mixing non-combat spells along with more conventional combative spells to overcome her opponents. Although she was incapacitated relatively early in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Hermione removed two Death Eaters from the fight in that short time. By the time she accompanied Ron and Harry on the search for the Horcruxes, her spell-work was swifter than opponents such as Mundungus Fletcher: Hermione defeated Antonin Dolohov and Gregory Goyle, blasted Nagini to defend Harry, repelled Yaxley when he forcibly Disapparated with her, blasted Fenrir Greyback away from an injured Lavender Brown, and saved him and Ron from being apprehended by Death Eaters when the trio went to see Xenophilius Lovegood. She defeated many Death Eaters during the Battle of Hogwarts and held her own against Bellatrix Lestrange with the assistance of Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood. They weren't able to defeat her, but this was likely because Hermione was fighting at a great disadvantage: she was forced to fight Bellatrix with Bellatrix's own wand, which was still loyal to Bellatrix. Being able to hold her own in such a disadvantageous condition against a very powerful witch like Bellatrix was an exceptional feat, further proof of her duelling ability.
  • Wandless and nonverbal magic: Hermione became highly skilled at non-verbal magic in her sixth year, being the first to succeed at it in her Defence Against the Dark Arts class and quickly becoming so good at non-verbal incantations that she did not need to say the incantations aloud for a wide variety of spells. She was known to have practised wandless magic in her years at Hogwarts. Hermione did not need the aid of a wand or magical instrument for a wide variety of spells.
  • Apparition: Hermione was the first in her class to Apparate successfully, achieving Apparition twice in that time and passing her test on the first attempt. According to Ron, her performance was 'perfect,' and the instructor praised her talent greatly. While on the hunt for the Horcruxes with Harry and Ron, Hermione frequently Apparated and Disapparated the three of them using side-along Apparition, twice when they were falling through the air.

Possessions

  • First wand: Hermione purchased a 10¾" vine wood wand with a dragon heartstring core in 1991. There was a pattern of vines the whole way up the wand's handle. She used it until the spring of 1998, when she, Harry Potter, and Ron Weasley were captured by Snatchers, who confiscated their wands. She subsequently used her adoptive aunt Bellatrix Lestrange's wand.
  • Dark Arts textbooks: Whilst not a Dark witch, Hermione had an extensive knowledge of dark magic and owned various books on the subject, including Magick Moste Evile, The Nightshade Guide to Necromancy, The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts, The Imperius Curse and How to Abuse It and Sonnets of a Sorcerer, which could all be found on her bookshelf in her office in the Ministry. Additionally, during the Horcrux Hunt, Hermione kept a copy of Secrets of the Darkest Art, in which she learned of the dark magic that can be used to split one's soul and how the effects of having a split soul can affect the human being as a result of using such incredible and highly dark magic.
  • The Tales of Beedle the Bard: Albus Dumbledore bequeathed the original publication of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, written in runes, to Hermione. It contained a clue about the Deathly Hallows, which led Hermione, Harry, and Ron to Xenophilius Lovegood, who told them about the legendary items. Later in life, Hermione translated the book into English and published her translation.
  • An Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe: This book was about wizarding schools in Europe. Before 1994, Hermione had read it and learned of many things, including the Durmstrang Institute's reputation for having an emphasis on Dark Magic. It is also mentioned to have information about Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. Later, in 1997, Hermione considered taking this book with her as she was sorting supplies for their mission to find Voldemort's Horcruxes. It is not specified if it was one of the books she decided to bring with her when she left with Harry and Ron. It is, however, unlikely, as it was of no real use to them on their mission.
  • Dress robes: Hermione wore a set of dress robes to the Yule Ball in 1994. They were made of a 'floaty, periwinkle-green material' and were considered to be quite attractive. In 1997, Hermione, once again, wore dress robes to the Malfoy Manor Ball.
  • Silver snake necklace: This necklace was worn by Hermione, which was a gift from her father, Lucius Malfoy. It was their family heirloom, and she wears it only at parties.

  • Yule Ball earrings: These were worn by Hermione to the Yule Ball in 1994, her fourth year, which she attended with Viktor Krum, one of the four Champions in the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts.

  • Silver-Snake Brooch: This brooch was worn by Hermione, which was a gift from her brother, Draco.

Relationships

Family:

Parents

Hermione does not know about her biological parents because they were killed by Death Eaters when she was very young. After their death, Malfoy's family adopted her.

Adoptive parents

Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy

Narcissa and Lucius were Hermione's adoptive parents after her biological parents' deaths.

Narcissa always wanted a daughter and loved her own. She treats her with absolute devotion, essentially giving her a "found family" that she could rely on. This motherly bond would soften the Malfoy family's hardened prejudices

Lucius long-held prejudices faced a profound test through his authentic love and sense of duty toward his adopted daughter. He must confront a difficult contradiction: the "Mudbloods" he has always despised now include the very child he nurtured.

Siblings

Draco Malfoy

Draco was Hermione's adoptive brother. Draco's parents adopted her after her biological parents' deaths. Living alongside Draco Malfoy cultivates an intensely competitive environment that drives both individuals to excel. Hermione’s relentless quest for knowledge often eclipses Draco's efforts, compelling him to strive harder for his father’s approval. Despite their initial rivalry, they gradually forged a powerful sibling bond characterized by mutual protection. Hermione gains a trusted ally who guides her through wizarding traditions, while Draco, in turn, benefits from her support in his academic pursuits.

After Voldemort won, Draco was sadly forced to witness his sister being imprisoned by the throne.

Outside family

Allies/Friends:

Harry Potter

Harry was Hermione's best friend and closest one until the end. When he lost a battle against the Dark Lord, Hermione was heartbroken and devastated.

Romances:

Ron Weasley

Ron was Hermione's second-closest friend until the end. After losing to Harry against Voldemort. Ron and Hermione were the only survivors fighting against the Death Eaters; however, Ron was killed by one of the Death Eaters while running towards Hermione and being hit by a killing curse.

Lord Voldemort

Voldemort
is her husband. It was a forced marriage after the battle ended, and Voldemort won against Harry Potter. Hermione did not want to leave her friends, who were almost set to be killed by the Death Eaters, but Hermione saved them and decided to marry the Dark Lord.
